What is a wormery?

Wormeries are a smart, efficient method of recycling your unwanted cooked and uncooked food waste. Wormeries have come a long way from those used years ago for high school science projects! They have been developed to become an environmentally and family friendly method of waste management, converting your food waste into nutrient rich compost. The modern wormery is made from a durable hard plastic and looks just like any ordinary compost bin. They come in a variety of sizes and to suite a variety of households. For a single person there is a twenty one litre wormery, a thirty five litre one that is recommended for an average family of four as well as a one hundred litre wormery for heavy duty use. All produce, as a byproduct, a good worm compost.

A convenient form of waste management

A wormery is remarkably easy to use. The wormeries we provide are inclusive of everything you need to start and maintain a successful food waste recycling and worm compost program. They come complete with a supply of Tiger Worms as well and a generous amount of Anti-acid lime mix. This is required from time to time to promote a healthy environment essential for the Tiger Worms to thrive in and therefore produce the best possible compost. Occasionally adding egg shells to the deposited waste creates a similar effect.

Our wormeries also come complete with simple, straightforward instructions and helpful hints and tips that will help you run a happy wormery supplying lots of lovely worm compost.

Which wormery?

There are two categories of wormeries, the classic wormery and the multi tray wormery system. Both are similar in that they are easy to use waste management programs and produce wonderful worm compost.

The classic wormery looks very much like a plastic compost bin, fixed with a small tap at the bottom. Food waste is deposited into the top chamber. As the worms are 'surface feeders' this is quickly transformed into wormery compost. As a by product a 'sump' or liquid is left over. Due to the unique internal drainage system in the Wormery, the "sump" is collected in the bottom chamber and can be easily poured out. This is a ready to use liquid compost and can be immediately fed to flowers and plants.

To consistently produce rich wormery compost, the multi tray system makes marvellous use of the fact that worms are surface feeders. It is made up of a strong, square, plastic frame which is filled in with a series of trays or drawers. Waste is placed in the bottom tray to start with and once this is full the tray above is then filled up and so on. Once the worms have followed the food scraps to the top, the bottom drawer will be "ready to use" worm compost. The Wormery is easy to maintain and an excellent method of waste management which also produces rich wormery compost.
